Amtrak’s westbound SUNSET was in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with a handsome A-B-B-A set of former Union Pacific E-units and nine cars. The locomotives were E9A 908, E9B 958B. E8B 927B and E9A 947. Former UP E-units had come in on the SUNSET for the first time on 15 July 1971, so they were still somewhat of a novelty, and a matched set was rather unusual. Notice that the 908 was displaying 907 in its number boards! Up until 5 July 1965 UP locomotives displayed their train number, and this was done by inserting individual numerals in the number boards; so it looks like someone was having a little fun! |
