GM&O REBEL |
Description: |
Here is a much-used publicity photo of the Gulf Mobile & Ohio REBEL on the median of North Rampart Street, just outside of the Southern Railway’s TERMINAL STATION in New Orleans. The photo is undated, but we know it was taken between 1940, when the GM&O was formed, and 1947, when the railroad adopted the Alton Railroad’s red-and-maroon paint scheme, because the train was still wearing its original red-and-silver colors. The REBEL was discontinued between New Orleans and Slidell on 8 March 1954, and TERMINAL STATION was closed on 16 April, when New Orleans Union passenger terminal was placed into full operation. MP (NO&LC) S1 9015 |
Description: |
The only blue-and-gray switch engines and cabooses on the Missouri Pacific Lines were on the railroad’s New Orleans & Lower Coast subsidiary. Here was Alco S1 9015 and caboose 2618 at the NO&LC’s headquarters in Algiers, the New Orleans neighborhood on the west side of the Mississippi River. The 9015 was the last of three Alcos (9013-9015) built for the NO&LC in October and November 1947. It was renumbered 6606 in 1961 and went to the Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal two years later, where it was renumbered 24. It was out of service by May 1978 and was scrapped in 1986. The 2618 was a war emergency caboose built by the MP from box car 40475 (ACF 1912) for its New Orleans, Texas & Mexico subsidiary in 1942. It went to the NO&LC after the war and was retired in 1967. Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern Steam |
Description: |
This photo illustrated the entire roster of the Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern on 5 July 1961. Prairie 250 (BLW 59239) was ready to go to work at the railroad’s yard in Hattiesburg, Mississippi while Mikado 300 (BLW 58241) was having its smokebox cleaned. This photo was taken on the day the railroad’s former master mechanic Grover Cleveland Logan was laid to rest. Mr. Logan had been responsible for keeping the B&HS in steam; but several months later, on 21 October the railroad bought a pair of former Wabash SW1’s, and after they arrived, steam was dead. The 250 was sold to the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern in Pennsylvania, while the 300 was placed on display next to the Southern Railway’s station in Hattiesburg. |

Amtrak Train No. 1 |
Description: |
Amtrak’s westbound SUNSET was in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with a handsome A-B-B-A set of former Union Pacific E-units and nine cars. The locomotives were E9A 908, E9B 958B. E8B 927B and E9A 947. Former UP E-units had come in on the SUNSET for the first time on 15 July 1971, so they were still somewhat of a novelty, and a matched set was rather unusual. Notice that the 908 was displaying 907 in its number boards! Up until 5 July 1965 UP locomotives displayed their train number, and this was done by inserting individual numerals in the number boards; so it looks like someone was having a little fun! |

GM&O Train No. 33 |
Description: |
A crewman on Gulf Mobile & Ohio train No. 33 was catching a set of orders in the crook of his arm as he passed Southern Railway agent-operator R.L. Lott at the Slidell, Louisiana depot. The trainman was repeating a procedure that took place on railroads all across North America for over 150 years, in this case obtaining authority for his train to operate over 28 miles of the Southern from Slidell to OLIVER JUNCTION in New Orleans. The device Mr. Lott was holding was known as a HIGH-SPEED TRAIN ORDER DELIVERY FORK and the orders were held in place by a piece of string. Mr. Lott went to work for the Southern when he got out of the Navy following WWII, retired around 1982 and passed away on 19 September 2016, at the age of 90. (approximate date of photo) |

Description: |
Kansas City Southern caboose 301 was on the rear of a transfer run operating over the New Orleans Public Belt, on its way from the KCS’s WEST YARD to the NOPB’s COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. The 301 was a one-of-a-kind car built by Thrall in August 1963, when the railroad was deciding who would build its next generation of cabooses. At the same time, Morrison built caboose 300 and Darby submitted stainless steel caboose 302. Darby went on to build cars 303-344 between 1965 and 1970; while the railroad’s very last cabs were the 400-406, built by International in 1976. (approximate date of photo) |
