Long before a GP38-2 wore the number, MILW #357, this heavyweight 2-8-2 Mikado had the honor. Built by Alco-Schenectady in March of 1919 originally as CM&StP #8654, it was renumbered in 1938 to MILW #357 as seen here. It was caught by an unknown photographer as it sat in the scrap line at the Bensenville yard after being retired in March of 1955. Specs - L3 Class, 63" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 27x32" cylinders, engine weight of 320,000 lb, tractive effort of 62,949 lb. |
