Description:  iStation. Here is a photo showing the Pennsylvania Railroad's original Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1860. It's dwarfed by the four-story Logan House, built in 1854. They're located at the intersection of 10th Avenue and 13th Street. The photographer's name and the exact date are not recorded.

Description:  iStation. Here is the first of two images of photos by unidentified photographers taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 21 December 1899. Shown here is the carnage of a Pennsylvania Railroad freight train that derailed near the Passenger Station. The train lost its brakes while descending the East Slope of the Allegheny Mountains, jumped the tracks near 14th Street, and demolished another freight on an adjacent track. Several PRR men died in the process. Here, PRR engine #1280 assists in the recovery effort; it's an H-3 (2-8-0) "Consolidated" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1888 and retired in July of 1913 after 25 years of service. The Station's trainshed is at the right; discernable through the haze is the cathedral-like Middle Roundhouse. Photo taken from the 12th Street Footbridge. William E. Burket Collection.

Description:  iStation. Here is an image of a photo that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 1 August 1933. Shown here is a Pennsylvania Railroad K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" steam locomotive that derailed near tse Passenger Station while pulling the eastbound "Liberty Limited." It split a switch, overturned, and demolished FG Tower. Engineman Frank Buck died in the process. Here, a sling has been placed around the engine's smokebox to begin rerailing it. Description:  iStation. Here is a photo by Galen Smith that was taken at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, c. 1947. Prominent here is an unidentified K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" steam locomotive pulling a passenger train into the Station on its way to Johnstown and points West. It's a scene that was repeated literally millions of times, but shall never be repeated again . . . alas. Note the Blue & White Lines bus that's poised to depart.
