4th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during January of 1961. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8655, #8676, and #8661. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8655 was built in 1957, but #8676 and #8661 were built in 1958. They are pushing a westbound mixed-cargo freight train pulled by PRR engines #9607 and #9614-B, but will uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another run up the Allegheny Mountains. Visible on the left are numerous passenger cars marshalled for reconditioning in the PRR's Passenger Car Shops behind them. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge. Description:
Altoona Action. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during September of 1965. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #8663, #8675, #8655, and #8676. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1957-1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. Pulling a single N-5C cabin car, they have just passed under the 7th Street Bridge on their way to Hollidaysburg ~ where they'll pick-up a string of new and rebuilt freight cars and pull them up the New Portage Branch to Gallitzin and points West. #8663 and #8675 will lead, while #8655 and #8676 will push from the rear but uncouple at Gallitzin and return to East Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain."

Good Day. Here is an original photo that I took of Pennsylvania Railroad property in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, 25 July 1960. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8663, #8657, and #8675. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #8663 and #8675 were built in 1958, but #8657 was built in 1957. From here, they will pass the WYE Tower, climb the Allegheny Mountains via the Muleshoe Curve, and then merge with the westbound mainline at Gallitzin. On the far side of the Gallitzin tunnels, these pusher engines will uncouple and head back to East Altoona via the Horseshoe Curve for another run up the Allegheny Mountains. This photo was taken at the Juniata River Railroad Bridge, near Bedford Street and the Passenger Station. #12 of 12.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8670, #8660, and #8673. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. These three helper engines, caboose #477781, two freight cars, and three lead engines have just arrived from Altoona. They have stopped, and are awaiting permission to back into the Hollidaysburg Yards. Duncansville's Fifth Street is in the photos center, Second Avenue is on the left, while Third Avenue (i.e., US Route 22) is visible on the right. These tracks occupy what was once the right-of-way for the Allegheny Portage Railroad (1834-1854).

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8668, #8663, #2200, #2201, #2203, and #2202. #8668 and #8663 are both AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. #2200, #2201, #2203, and #2202 are all EF-22's built by EMD in 1963 and rated at 2,250 horsepower each. They are pulling a westbound ore train. Note all of the G-39 "Ore Jennies"!

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8673, #8664, #8676, #8661, and #8669. All are AS-18AM's built by the American Locomotive Company in 1958 and rated at 1,800 horsepower each. They are pushing a 98-car iron-ore train (headed by engine #2225) up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, where they will uncouple and head back down the Alleghenies to East Altoona for yet another run up the Mountains. At the very end is N-8 caboose #478124. The homes in the background line one side of Nltoona's 10th Avenue.

Shown near the Passenger Station is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8608, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. It's moving so as to couple onto a westbound passenger train that's barely visible at the left. Sandwiched in between are (R to L) engines #8667 and two more units whose road numbers are not recorded.
