ARB. Here is a postal card entitled "Red Bridge over P.R.R. Yards, Altoona, Pa." No Postmark. Caption On Reverse: "This bridge spans the yards of the Penna. R.R. Co., which have a capacity of 10,000 cars a day ~ the largest single railroad yard in the world." Also known as the 8th Street Bridge. Depicted in the background is the Juniata section of Altoona; in the distance is a small portion of the Allegheny Mountain Range. The artist's name is not recorded.

Description:
ARB. Here is a postal card entitled "Pennsylvania 4233." No Postmark. Revised Caption On Reverse: "Pennsylvania Railroad 2-10-0 Decapod #4233 is crossing over westward past a set of Baldwin ["Centipede"] diesels in the mid-1950's. The [N-5C] caboose hop is about to pass beneath the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata, just east of Altoona, Pennsylvania, near the site of Rose Tower." PRR engine #4233 is an I-1SA built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during June of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in June of 1941, and retired in December of 1957 after 34 years of faithful service. Published by the Railroaders Memorial Museum in Altoona.

Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4314, #9821, and two more "EF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. #4314 is an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during November of 1922, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in December of 1942, and retired in September of 1959. #9821 is an EF-15A built by GM-EMD in May of 1951, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1967. Partially visible at the left is a pair of Baldwin-built "Centipedes"; in the middle distance are the Coaling Tipple and the Roundhouse situated in East Altoona. ARB. Here is an original photo by an unidentified photographer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in October of 1955. Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5818 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both are BH-50's built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60 passenger engines rated at 3,000 horsepower each, but later regeared and reclassified as 2,250 horsepower BH-50's for freight and helper service only. #5818 was built in January of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. ARB. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 17 July 1957. Prominent here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9730 and a Shark "B" unit whose number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9730 is a BF-16 built in February of 1951, rated at 1,600 horsepower, and retired in July of 1966 after just 15 years of revenue service. They're about to pass under Juniata's 8th Street Bridge with a mixed-cargo freight train on their way to 4th Street, where they'll stop for a crew change before proceeding up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. Partially visible at the left is PRR engine #7602, an ES-17M built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower.

In this context, they're about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata, and are heading to Conway and points West with a merchandise freight train.

PRR "Graveyard Train," #1 of 2, 1959

ARB. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of the first of two successive photos by David R. Sweetland that were taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1959. Shown here (R to L) is PRR engine #9517 and two more "EF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9517 was built in May of 1948 and retired in September of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata with a long string of retired PRR steam locomotives that are about to be recycled. This was one of at least three such "Graveyard Trains." The final one merited a photo in the "Altoona Mirror" of 28 August 1959, captioned as follows: "A solid train of 15 old Pennsylvania Railroad [I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod"] steam locomotives [are shown here] moving around the famed Horseshoe Curve near Altoona. The engines, representing 3,211 tons of metal, were en route from Altoona to a Midwestern steel mill to be cut up for scrap. The Pennsy, which once owned as many as 7,630 steam engines, became completely dieselized or electrified more than two years ago."

ARB. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in July of 1960. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5822 and another "Centipede" whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as BP-60's for passenger service and rated at 3,000 horsepower each; both were later regeared for freight service and reclassified as BH-50's rated at 2,500 horsepower each. #5822 was built in February of 1948 and retired in April of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 8th Street Bridge in Juniata with a mixed-cargo freight train on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West.

ARB. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide via Al Chione that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1962. The photographer is not identified. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9521 and three more "EF" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9521 is an EF-15 constructed in May of 1948 and retired in February of 1963 after just 15 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-B-A set is about to pass under the 8th Street in Juniata with an iron-ore train on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to the steel mills of Pittsburgh. ("PrrFan18n")
